Syracuse Remembers Those Who Gave All
SYRACUSE — The town of Syracuse kicked off Memorial Day with an annual parade. People lined the sidewalks of Huntington and Main streets, many wearing patriotic clothing or sporting small flags.
The parade included several police and fire department vehicles, motorcycles, marchers and floats, like the Syracuse Elementary Drum Circle. Participants in the parade tossed candies to children on the sidewalks as they passed.
After the parade, members of the Syracuse American Legion, Post 223, led by Post Commander Carolyn Gunder, held a Memorial Day service at the cemetery.
Chaplain Jerry Winegardener said a prayer while Legion Chaplain Chris Logenbaugh recalled some of the veterans who had died throughout the nation’s history.
In honor of those fallen veterans, the American Legion Honor Guard preformed a 21-gun salute and a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary played Taps.
