LTPO Working To Require Idle Speed
TIPPECANOE LAKE — Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners Association has been working with the DNR to have idle speed only on the lakes due to the current flood level. At this point the DNR has not issued a formal order for idle speed but is monitoring the situation daily.
Unfortunately, they are currently awaiting actual home damage prior to issuing the order. Given many residents are experiencing damage to property the LTPO is asking for all boaters to voluntarily operate at idle speed.
The sheriff’s department lake patrol deputies have been instructed to enforce the Indiana Code listed below and address the damage to property from the wake of a boat. This directive is independent of any pending action by DNR to limit the lake speed limit during this flood condition. The conditions on the lake are such lake patrol recognizes the duty to limit the damage to property and endure the safety of lake patrons.
Per Indiana Code 14-15-3-3:
A person operating a boat shall operate the boat in a careful and prudent manner, having due regard for the following:
(1) The rights, safety, and property of other persons.
(2) The conditions and hazards, actual and potential, then existing, including weather and density of traffic.
(3) Possible injury to the person or property of other persons.
The LTPO will continue to monitor and provide updates to its website.
