New Child Abuse Registry Available Online
INDIANA — A new, online registry is available to help prevent families from experiencing child abuse by a caretaker. The registry allows parents to search the child abuse history of an individual by using just their first and last name.
The database was launched this week after Kirk’s Law was passed in 2016. The law is named after Kirk Coleman of Elkhart County, a 19-month-old child that died under the care of his babysitter.
This registry provides access to information dating back to July 1, 2012. The registry includes convictions for the crimes of neglect of a dependent, child selling, battery against a child and all sex offenses against a child. Indiana is the first state in the nation to maintain a child abuse offender registry.
