Indiana All-Star Girls Clip Kentucky
FRANKFORT, KY. – The Indiana All-Star girls basketball team bounced back Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosier squad held off host Kentucky 58-51 in the second game of the annual series at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Indiana had dropped a 75-67 final in Indianapolis Saturday afternoon to snap a seven-game winning streak in the series.
Indiana won thanks in large part to its bench play. The reserves for the winners outscored the Kentucky bench 33-22. Not one starter scored in double figures in the game for Indiana.
Rachel McLimore, who played at Zionsville High School and is a DePaul recruit, led Indiana with a game-high 14 points.
Former Gary West Side guard Dana Evans, a Louisville recruit, had a strong all-around game for Indiana. Evans had eight points to go with seven assists, four steals and four rebounds.
Nicole Konieczny, a former standout at South Bend St. Joseph’s, had seven points in 12 minutes for the winners.
Indiana Miss Basketball Karissa McLaughlin, who starred at Homestead High School, scored four points. The Purdue recruit was 1-11 from the field, including 1-6 from 3-point range.
Jaelyn Penn, an Indiana University recruit, led Kentucky with nine points and 12 rebounds. Kayla Clifford also had nine points for Kentucky.
Kentucky Miss Basketball Lindsey Duvall, a Louisville recruit, missed both games this weekend due to recent knee surgery.
Indiana led by as many as 10 points in the closely contested game. Kentucky’s largest lead with three points.
Indiana shot 22-69 overall from the field, including 7-25 from distance. The winners were 7-11 from the free throw line, had 51 rebounds and 18 turnovers.
Kentucky shot 20-66 from the field, including 4-22 from deep. They were 7-11 from the line with 47 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
Indiana had a 19-9 scoring edge in points off turnovers and an 18-3 margin in second chance points.
Former Warsaw girls basketball coach Michelle Harter was an assistant coach for the Indiana team, which was coached by Curt Benge of Plainfield. Harter, who resigned as WCHS coach in March, was hired last Monday as the new girls basketball coach at Evansville Central High School.
