Wawasee Golf: Squires Squeak One Out
SYRACUSE – It’s still early and that’s why the matches are being played. Monday’s dual between Wawasee and Manchester’s girls golf teams saw some decent team scores, but surely not where either team wants to be in a month.
Manchester used a 45 from Sam Kissell and two other scores in the 40s to get past host Wawasee, 191-195, Monday afternoon at Maxwelton.
Kissell stuck to the script for the most part and played bogey golf, getting out of her round with just one double bogey on four after parring the first hole. Kelsey Eichenauer chimed in with a 47 after a rough round for the usually steady ace. Cora Bennett shot a 49 and Lydia Little had a 50 to give the Squires its first dual win of the young season.
“We just had a rough night,” said Manchester head coach Josh Troyer. “We are working on some swing changes and finding a good routine on the course. I am proud of the girls battling through it to pull out a victory tonight. We will continue to focus on making the improvements that will pay off come tournament time in September.”
Wawasee wasn’t sharp in its second action at Maxwelton this season. Jadison Rostochak shot her best round of the year with a medalist 44, and Belle Brunner came in with a 47, but the Lady Warriors had to take a pair of 52s from Lesley Tayagua and Zoey White to comprise its scores.
Manchester (1-0) will meet Columbia City Tuesday while Wawasee (1-1) will visit Whitko on Wednesday.
