Cubs Baseball: South Bend Eliminated From Playoff Contention
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Willy Ortiz, Orlando Romero and Joe Serrapica combined for a shutout as the Bowling Green Hot Rods topped the South Bend Cubs 5-0 on Saturday. The loss eliminates South Bend from playoff contention, which the final spot goes to Bowling Green.
Ortiz (8-3) picked up the win after he struck out one and walked three while allowing five hits over five scoreless innings. Tyson Miller (6-7) went six innings, allowing three runs and five hits in the Midwest League game. He also struck out three and walked two.
Bowling Green got on the board first in the third inning when Rene Pinto hit a two-run double.
The Hot Rods later added single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to finish off the shutout.
The Cubs were blanked for the 11th time this season, while the Hot Rods’ staff recorded their 14th shutout of the year.
With the win, Bowling Green improved to 12-4 against South Bend this season. The Hot Rods will host a playoff game Wednesday against Fort Wayne in a best of three series, Fort Wayne hosting games two and three Thursday and Friday nights.
