Cubs Baseball: Cubs End Season With Whimper
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Emilio Gustave homered and singled twice, scoring two runs as the Bowling Green Hot Rods defeated the South Bend Cubs 10-0 on Monday. The loss for the Cubs meant a sweep by the Hot Rods and the final Midwest League playoff spot, the Cubs having needed to sweep the Hot Rods to claim its spot before the weekend series began.
Miles Mastrobuoni homered and doubled with two RBIs for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green had a big four-run fourth inning in the blowout victory. Robbie Tenerowicz hit a two-run double en route to the six-run lead.
Bowling Green starter Kenny Rosenberg (7-7) picked up the win after allowing five hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Opposing starter Jose Paulino (7-6) took the loss in the Midwest League game after a rough outing in which he allowed six runs and nine hits over four innings.
The Cubs were held off the scoreboard for the 12th time this season, while the Hot Rods’ staff recorded their 15th shutout of the year.
With the win, Bowling Green improved to 14-4 against South Bend this season. The Cubs finished the season 75-64 overall, but were just 36-34 in the second half and were five back of Bowling Green to close out the season.
