Wawasee Sports Wrap: Sept. 7
Girls Golf
In the final regular season matchup for the Lady Warriors, Wawasee padded its stats with a 205-234 win over Fremont at Lake James Golf Club.
Ahead of the Northern Lakes Conference tournament this Saturday, Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone noted, “Still too many holes with big scores.” Wawasee did have to take a 52 in its total as its fourth score from Tate Cowan, but Fremont offered a 50 from Jaden Cartoso as its best score.
The Lady Warriors were led by 48s from Belle Brunner and Lesley Tayagua and a 50 from Valerie Haessig.
Wawasee completes its regular season at 11-6 overall in dual matches. The NLC tourney at Pretty Lake Country Club in Plymouth begins at approximately 8 a.m.
Volleyball
In a tightly contested match, Wawasee lost to its NLC rival Goshen 3-1. Both teams traded 25-23 wins in the first two games, but the RedHawks replied with a 25-19 game three score and closed out at 25-19.
Elizabeth Kleopfer had a good game for Wawasee with 15 assists and 10 digs. Peyton Rookstool led the attack with seven kills, Courtney Larson had five blocks, Brooke Heche had 19 digs, and Bethany Flannery added five aces and eight assists.
The tough loss sends the Lady Warriors to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in the NLC, its next match Saturday against Bremen.
Goshen’s JV spread out a 25-12, 25-11 win over Wawasee. Maddie Mottern had three kills and a block for the Lady Warriors.
Wawasee’s freshman team, however, remained unbeaten (9-0) with a 25-10, 25-12 win over Goshen and a 25-21, 25-19 win against Northridge. Catherine Ondrla had 11 aces and 10 assists for Wawasee, while Bailey Mayhew added eight kills and Delaney Hare recorded 10 aces.
Football
The Wawasee freshman team were soundly beaten by Northridge 57-6. The lone Wawasee score came from a touchdown pass from Parker Young to Kameron Salazar.
Wawasee (1-3) will host Concord next Thursday.
Boys Tennis
The Wawasee-Northridge match scheduled for Thursday was rained out. The make-up date will take place Monday, Sept. 11, at Wawasee with a start time of 5 p.m.
