LCA Soccer: Goalfest With Wabash
WINONA LAKE – There were no shortage of scoring opportunities in Monday’s girls soccer match between Lakeland Christian Academy and Wabash. A combined 36 shots, 10 finding the net yielded LCA a 6-4 win over the Apaches.
Two quick goals from Jessica Slone and Tori Calizo gave the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead, and after Wabash got one back from Bailey Yoakum, Anna Reimink put one in for LCA to give them a 3-1 advantage.
Goals by Lauren Starrett and Reimink gave LCA a four-goal lead and Slone later got her second goal of the match.
“I challenged the girls not to give up a goal in the first five minutes of the game which seems to be our Achilles heal. They responded incredibly,” said LCA head coach Nat Raber. “The first 20 minutes of the game was probably the best they played all season with the sustained pressure and ball control. This is Jessica Slone’s first year playing soccer so it was great to see her score a couple goals tonight.”
Yoakum would finish with the hat trick for Wabash, scoring her second and third tallies on penalties.
Maddie Paris made nine stops for LCA in net, earning the victory. McKenzie Grey had to turn away 19 tries for Wabash.
“It wont show up in the score sheet but Christel Reyes had an incredible game,” Slone stated. “She was definitely the MVP for the night playing back in a center defensive midfield position and controlling the game. She was everywhere all night. Maddie Paris filled in for an injured Brady Gross and played great too. We had four girls score tonight which is great to see. We hit a couple post early on in the game as well. After playing a game where we looked like we were running in water verses Trinity, the girls did a great job of playing fast and controlling the game.”
LCA (2-4) will next host Peru on Saturday.
