NorthWood Sports Wrap: Sept. 23
Cross Country
The Lady Panthers placed third at the New Haven Cross Country Invite.
In a tight battle for the title, Yorktown won the team title with 98 points, Luers second at 111 and NorthWood third at 112.
Erica Stutsman led the team with a runner-up finish, followed by Kate Jarvis in 17th, Whitney Wolfe in 24th, Jen Martinez in 34th and Breanne Resler in 35th.
NorthWood now heads into the second season, starting with the Northern Lakes Conference meet next Saturday at OxBow Park.
Boys Soccer
Fort Wayne Concordia enjoyed a 5-0 home win over NorthWood on Saturday.
Adam Gottschalk found the back of the net twice to lead the Cadets, while Joey Rucinski, Tumi Malatse and Luke Neuhause all scored a goal apiece. Max Miller had an assist for the Cadets.
NorthWood would take nine shots on net, Concordia goalie Jon Mueller making three stops for the clean slate. Micah Pippinger made six saves for the Panthers and Luke Lingle had three in relief.
NorthWood (7-6) visits John Glenn on Monday.
Girls Soccer
Culver Academy used its organization to its advantage in a 5-1 win at the Academy.
Mary Cate Wright netted the first goal in just the second minute for the Eagles, and Margaux McBride grabbed the second goal just two minutes before the half.
McBride and Sama Hazen each scored in the 55th minute to put the game on ice for the Academy, which had Hazen get her second 14 minutes later.
Avery Bontrager scored NorthWood’s only goal in the 59th minute on an assist from Kali Parisi in the 59th minute.
CGA (6-5-1) fired 22 shots on goal in the match to just seven from NorthWood, Kira Robinson having to make 17 stops. Sophie Michi made six stops for the Academy.
NorthWood (8-4-2) will visit Plymouth on Tuesday.
Volleyball
NorthWood went 3-1 at the Bremen Volleyball Tournament
The Lady Panthers topped Culver Academy 25-12, 25-15 and Triton 25-12, 25-14 but lost to John Glenn 20-25, 25-19, 14-16. NorthWood came back to beat Prairie Heights 25-23, 25-12.
For the tournament, Kennedy Wiens had 37 kills and Maddy Payne added 28 kills. Whitney Gessinger dug 31 attempts and Courtney Lengacher assisted on 103 points.
NorthWood (18-8) plays again Monday at Jimtown.
