Tennis Sectional Wrap: Jimmies, Pilgrims Claim Titles
At Goshen
The Jimtown boys tennis team gave retiring coach Steve Fledderman quite the present Friday night.
The Jimmies outlasted defending champion Fairfield by a 3-2 final to earn the Goshen Tennis Sectional championship at Goshen Middle School.
Jimtown, whose only other sectional title came in 2009, advances to the Concord Regional Tuesday night. The Jimmies, who are 18-4, will face either East Noble or Westview in one semifinal match. East Noble plays Westview Saturday at 10 a.m. for the sectional title at East Noble.
The other semifinal Tuesday will have host Concord versus Angola. The winners then meet at Concord Wednesday night to play for the regional crown and a spot in the Homestead Semistate on Oct. 7.
It was a case of the “Price Was Right” for the gutty Jimmies Friday night.
Senior Holden Price who was the hero for Jimtown in the title win. He outlasted junior Aaron Streit 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 on the No. 1 singles court for the clinching point. Price fought through cramps in the match that took 2 1/2 hours to complete.
The Jimmies earned a singles sweep to take home the trophy.
Ben Clarke topped Eric Gaby 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles play and Austin Pearson beat Dylan Kaufman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles action.
Fairfield won on both doubles courts. The duo of Tanner Nunemaker and Andrew Mamone beat Andrew Emeigh and Tim Gardner 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. The team of Jarin Bontrager and Ben Toole of the Falcons topped Nate Behrens and Preston Phillips 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles action to tie the match at the time at 2-2.
Fledderman, the highly-respected coach of the Jimmies, is stepping down at season’s end after 37 seasons.
Fairfield finishes its season at 11-10.
At Bremen
Surprise, surprise.
The Plymouth boys tennis team won a sectional championship.
The Pilgrims made it 21 straight sectional titles by beating Glenn 4-1 in the title match of the Bremen Sectional.
The Pilgrims advance to the Culver Academy Regional Tuesday night.
Plymouth won all three singles matches in straight sets. Tommy Holloway won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 for the champs. Mitch Rose posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Andy Rostron prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
The team of Dylan Voreis and Shaun Frantz notched a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles for the Pilgrims.
Glenn’s lone point came at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win.
Plymouth will take a 7-10 mark into regional play.
