Grace Soccer: IWU Shuts Out Grace Ladies
MARION – Grace’s women’s soccer team struggled to find the back of the net on Wednesday at Indiana Wesleyan.
The Lady Lancers (4-6-3, 1-3 Crossroads League) had almost twice as many shots as Indiana Wesleyan, but Grace fell to the hosts 3-0.
Grace had a 15-8 shot advantage in the match, but the Wildcats (9-1-2, 2-1-1 CL) made their shots count. The Wildcats, who are receiving votes in the NAIA, scored all three of their goals in the first 30 minutes.
IWU stunned Grace from the onset, scoring less than three minutes into the match off a cross into the penalty box.
The Lady Lancers did their best to fight back, taking four shots over the next 20 minutes. But the Wildcats doubled their lead with a second goal at the 25:24 mark. IWU made the score 3-0 with yet another goal two minutes later.
The score could have been worse when IWU was awarded a penalty kick in the 35th minute, but Grace’s goalkeeper Abby Schue made a save on the PK attempt.
Despite going into halftime behind 3-0, the Lady Lancers were resolved to continue fighting. Grace dominated the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 10-0.
But the Lady Lancers were unable to find the back of the net and suffered their sixth shutout of the season.
Autumn Raulerson had three shots to lead Grace. Sacia Hanson, Kristen Bellinger, Shelby Fort, Liz Van Wormer and Corinne Villalobos each had two shots.
In addition to outshooting IWU by seven, Grace also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Wildcats were whistled for 15 fouls compared to eight for Grace.
The Lady Lancers return home on Saturday, hosting St. Francis at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
