WARSAW — Additional information has been released regarding the stabbing homicide on Monday, Oct. 23. According to the affidavit of probable cause, the victim was found with 63 stab wounds.
At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department found David L. Strowder Jr., 21, Elkhart, lying face down in the grass near CR 300N. Strowder was bleeding from multiple stab wounds and unconscious.
Strowder was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was performed and 63 stab wounds were discovered. The death was ruled a homicide.
Officers then began to process the crime scene. A shoe print was discovered that did not match Strowder’s. With the assistance of Elkhart City detectives, officers received tips regarding Derrick L. Wandrick, 23, Harvey, Ill. Wandrick was transported to the Elkhart Police Department for an interview.
Wandrick admitted he was in Warsaw on Oct. 23, in Strowder’s vehicle. He further advised he had driven Strowder’s vehicle back to Elkhart. During the interview, officers observed a cut on the palm of Wandrick’s hand and compared his shoes to the shoe print found at the scene. Wandrick’s shoes and the shoe print found at the scene were of similar design. Officers also discovered two cell phones on Wandrick’s person, one belonging to Wandrick and one belonging to Strowder.
Officers were able to locate Strowder’s vehicle in Elkhart. Inside the vehicle, officers observed a cut on the passenger side seat, blood on the center console and on the passenger side trim panel.
It was discovered that Wandrick was at a Warsaw residence between 7:45 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 23, driving Strowder’s vehicle. Witnesses observed Wandrick attempting to clean blood from inside the vehicle with bleach water. Officers discovered a location where the soil had been disturbed with a shoe print. The print was similar to the tread on Wandrick’s shoes. Under the shoe print, officers found a knife believed to be the murder weapon.
Wandrink is currently in custody at the Kosciusko County Jail under the charge of felony murder.
