St. Joe Ladies Fall In State Soccer Finale
INDIANAPOLIS – Evansville Memorial had South Bend St. Joseph’s number for the second time this soccer season Saturday.
The top-ranked Tigers topped the Indians 3-1 in the Class 2-A girls soccer state title match at IUPUI.
Memorial, which beat St. Joe at a tournament 1-0 during the regular season, claimed its fourth state championship with the win.
No. 4 St. Joe, which was trying for its third state title in program history, finishes its season at 18-5-1.
Memorial scored in the 10th minute on a header by Annah Hopkins for a 1-0 lead. Hope Lensing made it 2-0 for the champions.
St. Joe got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute as Madison Veldman tallied a goal to make it 2-1.
Memorial added an insurance score in the 80th minute on a header by Grace Lensing for the 3-1 final.
Evansville had a 14-7 advantage in shots for the match and a 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Evansville also had 14 fouls to nine for the Indians.
Kamryn Wieschhaus had five saves for St. Joe, which had only allowed 12 goals all season prior to Saturday.
Evansville Memorial finishes the season at 19-4.
Caitlyn Casey of St. Joe was given the Mental Attitude Award following the contest.
