Mangas Magnificent In IWU Victory
MARION – Kyle Mangas did what he does best Thursday night.
He showcased his stellar skill set on the basketball court.
The former Warsaw star had a career night in leading Indiana Wesleyan past Northwestern (Ohio) 92-77 in non-conference action at IWU.
Mangas, a freshman guard for the undefeated Wildcats, tossed in a career-high 33 points in the win. Mangas, in his usual efficient manner, hit 12-16 shots from the field in the contest. He was 5-6 from 3-point range and also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes of action.
IWU coach Greg Tonagel, a former star guard himself at LaPorte High School, was not surprised by the play of the former Indiana All-Star.
“What you saw tonight is what I see every day,” said Tonagel after the outstanding performance by Mangas. “He scores it and he scores in a variety of ways. He missed his last two shots so he scored 33 points on just 14 shots. He is so efficient. He knows how to play basketball without over dribbling and he does it with getting his teammates involved which is a really rare thing to be able to do.”
Mangas, a 6-3 backcourt ace, poured in 17 first-half point as IWU led 42-41 at halftime.
Mangas, the son of Tim and Ann Mangas, led Warsaw to a 61-17 mark in his prolific prep career. He averaged 22.6 points-per-game last season in helping the Tigers win their second straight Class 4-A sectional title and finish 7-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference for the third straight year, the first time that had ever been done by a boys basketball team.
Mangas, who earned the Ink Free News Player of the Year honor as both a junior and a senior, became the 11th All-Star in the tradition-rich history of Warsaw basketball in 2017. He finished his high school career fourth all-time in career scoring at WCHS with 1,450 points.
Mangas now leads his team in scoring at 15.8 points-per-game. He is also averaging 4.3 rebounds per game and is first on the Wildcats with 22 assists.
IWU, ranked No. 6 in NAIA, sits at 6-0 on the season. The Wildcats return to action next Wednesday night at No. 8 IU-East. Tipoff in Richmond is set for 7 p.m.
