Bell Aircraft Museum Board Member Finds Many Ways To Share Her Talents
WARSAW — To say that Warsaw resident Heidi Orr is multifaceted would probably be selling her very short. Although Orr was initially contacted to discuss her position as a board member for the Bell Aircraft Museum in Mentone, it quickly became clear that her talents extended far beyond her role in helping to guide the popular Mentone attraction.
Originally from Fort Wayne, Orr graduated from Grace College in Winona Lake in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology. While at Grace, she played on the school’s softball team. Admittedly, softball wasn’t her best sport coming out of South Side high school, where she also participated in soccer, volleyball and basketball, earning 11 varsity letters along the way. In fact, the first time she played competitive softball was during her freshman year in high school.
“I would have done field events for the track team, too, but they said I’d have to do running events as well,” she said. “But I don’t like to run!”
She was attracted to Grace by its small college environment which was close enough to home but still allowed her to live the college experience. It didn’t hurt that Grace also offered her scholarship money for both softball and academics.
Obviously a versatile athlete, Orr continued her competitive acumen post-college as a roller derby queen. She participated for a few years as a member of the Warsaw-based Lake City Roller Dolls, prior to taking her talents back to her hometown and joining the Fort Wayne Derby Girls, where she also served as a member of the board of directors. To the dismay of her teammates, however, she currently is taking a one-year hiatus from competition to pursue a certificate in human resources through Ivy Tech.
Life isn’t all fun and games for Orr, though. She makes her living as a home-based therapist for Lifeline Youth and Family Services, a Fort Wayne-based non-profit agency that provides in-home counseling to clients in need of a more comfortable treatment environment. The region Orr services includes Kosciusko, Marshall and Elkhart counties. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech and Indiana Tech, teaching basic social work, human services and psychology classes.
As if those jobs weren’t enough to keep her busy, she also works at the Holiday Skating Center in Elkhart. Although it’s a long drive for a part-time job, Orr admitted the real perk is that she gets to skate for free.
Let’s not forget that she also serves as a volunteer board member for the Bell Aircraft Museum. She started as a volunteer in 2013, when the museum was busy restoring the 1963 Bell UH-1D helicopter, better known as a Huey. She came to the museum on the recommendation of a co-worker and, less than a year after she initially walked through its doors, she was asked to join its board of directors.
“We work on about one project each year,” said Orr about the museum. “We put together new displays and exhibits to make sure the museum is constantly changing. We try to make it fun and hopefully bring visitors back to see what is new.”
Currently, Orr and her fellow board members are getting ready for a craft show fundraiser, taking place at the Mentone Fire Station from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.
As if all this isn’t enough, Orr also serves as a board member with Not Easily Broken Ministries, a local relationship counseling group. Fortunately for Orr, she obviously has found that elusive eighth day in each of her weeks!
