NorthWood Basketball: Feenstra Lifts Panthers Past Portage
MIDDLEBURY – The NorthWood girls basketball team capped the 2017 portion of its schedule in thrilling fashion Saturday.
The Panthers got some late game heroics from Savannah Feenstra to edge Portage 52-51 in the third-place game of The Bankers Classic Tournament hosted by Northridge.
Feenstra, the lone senior for the Panthers, was fouled attempting a 3-point shot with her team trailing 51-48 with less than two seconds to play. She made the first two free throws and then scored on a putback off her miss on the third for the one-point win.
NorthWood did not get to play its final pool play game Saturday morning as opponent South Bend Adams chose not to attend the tourney due to the inclement weather. The Panthers went 1-1 in their pool play games on Friday.
Portage led 15-7 after the opening period and 26-25 at halftime. The indians were ahead 35-34 going into the final frame.
Feenstra and Maddy Payne each scored 14 points to pace the winners.
Kenzie Bergman and Karlie Fielstra each added seven points for the Panthers.
NorthWood, now 12-4 on the season, will host Wawasee next Saturday night in Northern Lakes Conference play. The Panthers are 3-0 in conference action.
