City Pedaling Its Way To Becoming More Bike Friendly
WARSAW — Two public meetings will be held this week related to plans for the development of Market Street in order to make the area safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Both meetings are being hosted by the city and will be held in the council chambers at city hall, 102 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw. Community members are invited to come and share their ideas.
A public workshop will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. tonight, Jan. 22. This will include a presentation of the project. From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, a draft concept presentation will be held.
According to Assistant City Planner Justin Taylor, during development of the bicycle and pedestrian master plan in 2012, Market Street was identified as a desired pedestrian corridor.
“Efforts to enhance the pedestrian facilities along this stretch of road have been made over the past few years,” said Taylor.
After completion of a preliminary design process, the city will have a better idea of the cost involved for the project. “Knowing the cost will help us understand a timeline based on funding opportunities,” Taylor explained.
The first phase of the Market Street project created a large, mixed use pathway along the south side from McKinley Street to Bronson Street. The second phase will bring that path west, to the railroad tracks by Park Avenue. A cycle track will be the element that brings pedestrians safely through the downtown area.
