Mangas, Groninger Help Wildcats Best Bethel
MARION – Kyle Mangas hit another big shot at another big moment Saturday.
No surprise there for the former Warsaw basketball star.
Mangas drained a long-range triple late in the game to help his Indiana Wesleyan University squad subdue Bethel College 84-82 in Crossroads League play Saturday at IWU.
Freshman guard Mangas nailed an NBA range trey with 20 seconds to play to give his team an 82-76 lead. It turned out that the Wildcats would need those points as the Pilots rallied. The Wildcats held on for the win when a 3-pointer at the final horn by Bethel’s Ryan Lutz hit off the back of the rim.
Mangas, who is leading the No. 8 ranked Wildcats in scoring, poured in a game-high 25 points Saturday. He hit 9-17 shots from the field, including going 5-9 from distance. He also had three rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in 39 minutes.
IWU hit on 12-28 treys in the win with the dozen threes matching a season high. The Wildcats had an 18-9 edge in points off turnovers and a 10-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Senior forward Gage Ott led Bethel with 19 points and seven rebounds. Lutz, a junior guard who played at Penn High School, had 18 points for the Pilots.
Tanner Shepherd, a senior guard for the Pilots, scored six points. The former Triton High School standout also had six assists and three rebounds.
The Pilots have lost four straight games for the first time since February of 2013.
IWU improves to 18-6 overall and moves to 9-3 in league play. The Wildcats play at Marian Tuesday night.
Bethel drops to 17-7 overall and 6-6 in Crossroads Leaguep lay. The Pilots host Goshen College Wednesday night in Mishawaka.
Former WCHS standout Dayton Groninger also helped her IWU team to another win Saturday.
Freshman Groninger had eight points as the No. 20 ranked IWU ladies rolled past Bethel 93-49 in Crossroads League play.
Groninger also had six rebounds and a team-high four assists in 19 minutes of action for IWU.
Bethel freshman Kelsey Brickner, a former standout at Northridge High School, led the Pilots with 22 points.
IWU improves to 18-6 overall and moves to 10-2 in league play. Bethel falls to 6-18 and 1-11.
IWU plays at Marian and Bethel hosts Goshen College in league action Wednesday night.
