Wawasee Sports Wrap: Jan. 29
Gymnastics
The ebbs and flows of the Wawasee gymnastics season took a sharp upturn Monday evening. Despite some trouble on the beam, Wawasee posted its top score by far this season with a 106.45 to blow past East Noble’s 101.8 in Syracuse.
After posting a pair of 103s in recent weeks, Wawasee had a tremendous night on floor with its top event effort of the year at 28.425, all three of its scorers in the nines and all three with season highs. Reagan Atwood posted a 9.6, Jada Parzygnot had a 9.5 and Aundreya Wegener had a 9.3. Atwood also had a big score on beam at 9.45 and an 8.9 on vault to lead the night, while Parzygnot posted the top score on bars at 8.55.
With all the big scores around, Wawasee managed to have a stinker on beam with nine falls, which took away what could have been a monster night.
“This was a great meet,” said Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “Beam gave us some trouble. Very pleased with floor and vault. Glad to hit 106.45, a season high!”
Ciara Honeycutt was the top scorer for East Noble, taking second on beam at 9.13 and third on vault at 8.45, which tied teammate Miah Hudson.
Wawasee (5-1) will take on DeKalb Thursday in what should be a matchup of sectional team contenders.
Boys Basketball
The freshman team continued its strong season with another win Monday night, 33-30, at NorthWood.
Justin Castro led the charge for the Warriors with 11 points, with Brandon Tayagua at eight points and Adam Beer sending in six points.
Caleb Schwartz and Jon Cripe each netted six points to pace the Panthers. Jacob Raasch added five points for NorthWood.
The Warriors are 14-3 on the campaign and will get a break until Saturday when it visits Angola.
Middle School Basketball

In the win, Ben Haines scored 14 points and Keaton Dukes added nine points. In the loss, Dukes finished with 11 points and Kadin Jones chipped in three points. Milford concludes its season 7-5 overall.
