Fire On Shores Of Lake Wawasee Damages Home
LAKE WAWASEE — A house fire on Morrison Island, which is situated on the far southeastern corner of Lake Wawasee, was reported at approximately 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. The structure, located at 10301 N. Grand Blvd., Syracuse, is owned by Richard L. and Alice Gross, McCordsville, according to GIS. It was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Construction workers nearby the home reportedly saw smoke coming from the home and called 911. Turkey Creek Fire Department responded to the scene. The house was accessible only by using a footbridge across a narrow channel, requiring fire fighters to drag their hoses approximately 300 feet from the nearest fire hydrant and across the bridge to reach the home.
Departments called to provide equipment and manpower to the scene included Benton Township (Elkhart County), North Webster Tippecanoe Township Fire Department, Perry Township (Ligonier) and Sparta Township (Cromwell). Turkey Creek EMS and North Webster Tippecanoe Township EMS also were at the scene.
The damage appeared to be centered on the second floor of the house, although smoke was visible from the lower part of the structure, as well. According to public records, the house was built in 1924.
