Gongwer Shows Shooting Skills In All-Star Action
MISHAWAKA – Kaden Gongwer made the most of his opportunities Tuesday night.
The NorthWood standout did what he does best for the Gray team in the McDonald’s Michiana All-Star Basketball Game at Bethel College.

Guard Gongwer drained a trio of triples for his squad in the seventh annual area showcase held in the Wiekamp Athletic Center.
Gonger’s team ended up on the short end of a 120-113 final to the Red team in the contest.
Valparaiso star Brandon Newman poured in a game-high 33 points and the Red team closed the game with a 13-6 run to earn the victory. The Gray team went the final 3:26 of the up-and-down contest, which saw 202 shots attempted, without a field goal.
Gongwer did his part for the Gray team. The heady backcourt ace hit 4-8 shots overall from the field, including 3-7 from 3-point land, to score 11 points.
The Red team had six players tally double figures in the win. The Red squad led 60-56 at halftime as former South Bend Riley star Sharmar Dillard had 13 points and Newman 10.
Gongwer averaged 13 points and three assists per game during his junior season for the Panthers. He shot 39 percent from distance in helping NorthWood go 18-6 overall and 4-3 in the NLC. Coach Aaron Wolfe’s team, which featured six seniors, won its own Class 3-A sectional championship before losing to Marion in a regional semifinal contest.
Gongwer, who was a second-team pick to the IFN All-Area team, played 15 minutes in the All-Star event Tuesday night. The 5-9 junior guard, who was the second leading scorer for the Panthers this past season, also had three rebounds.
Former South Bend Riley star Damezi Anderson led the Gray team with 22 points. The Indiana University recruit led Riley to the Class 4-A semistate game earlier this month.
Rylen Grundy of Riley had 18 points for the Gray squad. Connor Utley (Northridge) had 12 points, Luke Stephens (Fairfield) scored 11 and Elijah Hales (Westview) nine for the Gray. Weston Sage (Elkhart Christian Academy) also had nine points.
Newman, who led his Valpo team to a Class 4-A sectional title and is being recruited by several Division I college programs, also racked up 18 rebounds. Noah Applegate of Penn had 14 points for the winners, while Trey Gallope of Elkhart Memorial scored 12 points.
The Gray team lost despite making 19 treys in a staggering 57 attempts from long range.
The Red team was 50-102 overall from the field, including 8-36 from distance.
