IWU To Unveil National Title Banner
MARION – Fans of Kyle Mangas and his Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team will have one more chance to salute them.
IWU is set to unveil its NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship banner on Thursday, April 12. The ceremony to honor the Wildcats will begin at 7 p.m. in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan won the national championship on March 13 with an 84-71 victory over the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in the title game. The red banner championship is the third in the past five years for the Wildcats, which is tied for the most in NAIA Division II history.
Mangas had a record-setting freshman season to lead IWU to its national title. The 6-3 guard averaged a team-high 21.5 points-per-game in scoring a single-season program record 818 points. The former Warsaw star averaged 22 points and eight rebounds in his team’s five wins in the National Championships to earn Tourney MVP honors.
Mangas, who was the Ink Free News Player of the Year in both 2016 and 2017, led the Wildcats to both the regular season and tournament championships in the Crossroads League. He was named the Crossroads League Player of the Year, the first freshman in league history to garner the award.
Mangas was the only freshman in the country named among the 30 players to the NAIA All-American teams. He was a first-team choice to the squad.
IWU coaches and players will speak at the unveiling. Championship t-shirts will be available for purchase and following the ceremony, players and coaches will be available for autographs.
