Warsaw Woman Arrested For Theft, Forgery After Using Another Tenant’s Rent Payment As Her Own
WARSAW — A Warsaw woman was recently arrested after she changed the information on another tenant’s rent payment to her own.
Jeanna Ruthann Backus, 41, 1692 East CR 200N, Lot 124, Warsaw, is being charged with forgery, a level 6 felony, and theft, a class A misdemeanor.
On Nov. 21, 2017, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department spoke with a tenant of Greenacres Mobile Home Park. The tenant advised that he deposited a MoneyGram of $290 into the dropbox at the park office in September. The tenant then received a notice stating he did not pay his rent.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the tenant was able to obtain a copy of the receipt. The MoneyGram had been altered and cashed. Tha altered MoneyGram showed that rent was paid to lot 124 and the original tenants name had been replaced by Backus’ name.
Greenacres revealed that Backus and her husband were the tenants at lot 124. Backus admitted to the officer that she altered the original MoneyGram with her information. Backus agreed to pay the original tenant $290 but has failed to do so.
Backus was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on April 9, with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
