Baseball
Jaden Miller was the man of the hour for NorthWood Friday night.
Miller cracked a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift his team past Northridge 6-3.
Miller’s shot off a 1-0 pitch was the difference as the Panther prevailed in the Northern Lakes Conference matchup in Middlebury.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo shot by Davis Enfield.
NorthWood seized a 3-1 lead in the third as Matt Dutkowski and Payton Bear hit back-to-back homers.
Alec Holcomb earned the win for the Panthers in relief. He allowed no runs and three hits over two and a third innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Dutkowski went the first five and two-thirds innings.
The trio of Miller, Hunter Warren and Sawyer Warren each had multiple hits for the Panthers.
NorthWood hosts NLC foe Wawasee Monday night.
Girls Tennis
The NorthWood girls tennis team topped Elkhart Memorial 4-1.
The Panthers got dominating wins at three spots to earn the Northern Lakes Conference win in action at Goshen College.
Reegan Miller posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for the Panthers.
Gretchen Adams won 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 2 singles court for NorthWood. The No. 1 doubles team of Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker won 6-1, 6-2.
The team of Alex Jesse and Riley Graber won 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Memorial’s lone point came at No. 3 singles as Callan Kubiak outlasted Lauren Mikel in three sets.
NorthWood won the JV match 6-2. Singles winners for the Panthers were Kate Stillson, Kennedy Kuhn, Leslie Olvera and Alessandra Hoffmann. Winning in doubles were the teams of Caroline Mullet and Olivia Feller and Paige Henschen and Abigail Richner.
NorthWood plays in the Culver Academy Invitational on Saturday.
Boys Track
A record-setting performance by one its relay teams highlighted the NorthWood boys track team effort in the Kelly Relays.
The 4 X 200 relay team of Landon Parker, Terrell Pratcher, Bronson Yoder and Brayton Yoder set a meet record in claiming first-place honors in the event held at Concord High School. The quartet clocked in a winning time of 1:30.16, breaking the old standard of 1:30.94 set by Elkhart Central in 2007.
The Panthers scored 60 points to finish in fourth place in Class A of the 48th annual event.
Elkhart Central won the Class A title with 96 points. Goshen, which had won the last five team titles, was runner-up with 83 points. Concord was third with 77 points, followed by NorthWood (60), Northridge (54) and New Prairie (31).
The Panthers also won the long jump relay as the trio of Bronson Yoder (20-11), Jason Borkholder (19-10 1/2) and Pratcher (19-0 1/2) totaled a top effort of 59-10.
Fairfield won the Class B team title for the eighth straight year. The Falcons scored 95 points with Westview second with 67 points.
NorthWood will compete in the NLC Meet at Goshen Tuesday night.
