Wawasee Sports Wrap: May 4
Baseball
A fast start by Memorial was enough to defeat Wawsaee, 8-4, Friday afternoon in Northern Lakes Conference action.
The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the first, then tacked on five more to grab command. Jordan Siddens had a two-run double and Landon Lee added a two-run single in the second.
Wawasee again exhibited the gusto it showed Thursday in rallying past Memorial in extras, scoring all of its runs in the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t catch the early lead.
Jeremiah Bess, Jairus Boyer and Jacob Garcia all had RBIs for the Warriors, which drop below .500 in the conference at 4-5 in league play.
The Memorial JV were able to claim a 5-4 win over Wawasee.
Wawasee (8-8) will host Fort Wayne Concordia Saturday morning.
Girls Tennis
Wawasee stepped out of the Northern Lakes Conference grind and took on Lakeland Friday night, culminating in a 4-1 win.
The doubles courts for Wawasee were solid, with the No. 1 team of Courtney Larson and Kabrea Rostochak taking care of Isabelle Larimer and Elly Franke one and three, and the No. 2 duo of Brianna Haessig and Molly Jones posting a three and one win over Ally Llena and Vivi Guzman.
Elizabeth Kleopfer rallied from a 6-2 first set loss to Beth Stroop to come back for a 6-1, 6-1 result at No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles play, Kennedy Church earned a solid two and love win over Gabrielle Larimer.
The lone Lakeland triumph came from Beka Stroop at No. 1 singles, who took out Kendra Doerr 7-5, 6-2.
Wawasee had a stronghold on the JV courts, winning five of six matchups. Abby Morehead, Kaitlin Graber and Sailor Davis-York all earned singles courts, while the teams of Brittney Jackson and Valerie Haessig along with Tate Cowan and Ava Harker claimed victory.
Wawasee will return to the court Saturday morning at Jimtown.
Softball
Wawasee and Elkhart Memorial staged a doubleheader Friday evening as part of a make-up game from two weeks ago, and not much was settled.
Wawasee won its ‘home’ game in the opener of the twin bill, 15-6, while Memorial took game two by an 11-10 count.
Game one saw Delaney Hare and Aubrey Kuhn both college three hits and two RBIs apiece while Graceanne Kerlin had a pair of hits and three driven in. Ava Rush and Olivia Stuck both scored three runs in the win. Wawasee as a whole had 13 hits.
Bethany Flannery got the win in the circle, working six innings of six-hit ball.
Game two saw Wawasee pile up 16 more hits, but Memorial kept chipping away and hung a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to take the one-run lead.
Faith Swihart paced the Wawasee offense with three hits and two RBIs while five others had two hits apiece. Rush added two RBIs on her triple. Ashley Asher was the wrecking crew for Memorial in game two, homering and driving in five for the Charger. Asher also scored three runs.
Turnabout had Flannery take the loss in relief, giving up three runs in an inning of work. Gabby Moore allowed just a run in three innings of relief to get the win in game two for the Chargers.
Wawasee (6-10, 3-6 NLC) will visit Eastside on Saturday.
