Warsaw Tennis: Singles Lineup Top Seeds For NLC Tourney
WARSAW – The Warsaw girls tennis team singled out the league competition throughout the regular season.
The Tigers will look to repeat the process in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament now.
Warsaw, which went a perfect 7-0 to claim the NLC title, heads into the three-day tourney at Plymouth led by its stellar singles lineup.
The Tigers have the top seeds at all three singles positions as the tourney begins Wednesday at Plymouth. Seniors Liza Lewis and Ella Knight are the No. 1 seeds at No. 1 and No. 2 with sophomore teammate Alyssa Zellers the top seed at No. 3.
Warsaw’s stellar singles lineup all went 7-0 during NLC regular-season play to earn the top seeds for the league tournament.
Warsaw capped its undefeated NLC regular season with a 5-0 win over Goshen Monday night. The Tigers also beat Memorial, Northridge and Wawasee by 5-0 finals, topped NorthWood 4-1 and edged past both Plymouth and Concord by 3-2 counts.
Lewis will face Northridge freshman Riley Wheatley in a first-round match. Knight will play Goshen freshman Lucy Kramer in her first match. Zellers is paired against Elkhart Memorial junior Eva Morales to open the tourney.
In other No. 1 first-round matchups, Wawasee junior Kendra Doerr faces Concord senior Maya Klopfenstein, who is the No. 2 seed. NorthWood junior Reegan Miller, the No. 3 seed, faces Goshen senior Anna Podgorski.
Wawasee sophomore Elizabeth Kleopfer will play Plymouth senior Kyla Heckaman in a first-round match at No. 2 singles. NorthWood junior Gretchen Adams faces Memorial exchange student Fillippa Klassen.
The No. 3 singles first-round schedule also has Wawasee sophomore Kennedy Church taking on Concord senior Camille Lozier. NorthWood junior Lauren Mikel faces Northridge senior Sarah Hartman.
The Warsaw No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Shoaf and Rachel Boyle will play the Memorial tandem of Hannah Hakim and Paula Almirall in the first round. NorthWood’s senior pair of Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker, the No. 3 seed, faces Kabrea Rostochak and Courtney Larson of Wawasee in first-round action.
The Warsaw duo of Reagan Merchant and Rachel Boyle, the No. 3 seed, face Wawasee’s Brianne Haessig and Molly Jones in the opening round at No. 2 doubles play. The NorthWood team of Riley Graber and Alex Jesse faces the Goshen team of Sophia Kirkton and Sage Christner.
Warsaw’s No. 1 doubles team was 4-3 in league action, while the No. 2 doubles duo was 5-2.
Concord was the regular-season runner-up at 6-1. Plymouth was third at 5-2, followed by NorthWood (4-3), Northridge (3-4), Elkhart Memorial (2-5), Wawasee (1-6) and Goshen (0-7).
The Pilgrims have the top seeds at both doubles positions. The duo of Leah Smith and McKenzie Scheetz are the No. 1 seed at No. 1 after going 6-1. The team of Mary Beatty and Audie Plothow are seeded first at No. 2 after posing a 7-0 mark during the regular season league slate.
The NLC Tourney is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Plymouth.
