Warsaw Artist Makes Waves With Artwork For Luxury Super-Yacht
WARSAW — Warsaw-based sculptor and painter Mary Pat Wallen completed custom artwork for the salon of a super-yacht, owned by one of her long-time clients. The yacht, a Benetti Fast 125 named Skyler, was the third of its type launched, debuting at the Versilia Yachting Rendezvous hosted in Viareggio, Italy. Skyler received significant international coverage from the yachting press, including articles published in Superyacht News, BoatMag International, Boats Drive Magazine and Haute Living.
Wallen worked closely with Skyler’s owner to develop one-of-a-kind paintings specifically created to complement the boat’s salons.
Her unusual technique combines painting and sculpting, and required hours of sketching and collaborating with the client. Once the sketch has been approved, she starts the painstaking process of applying over 20 layers of patina onto aluminum. Each layer chemically reacts with the previous layer to create a unique texture. The sheets are then applied to wood. Figures on the paintings are hand-sculpted out of epoxy and then gold leafed. The result is an original creation of unique textures, multiple planes, and deckle edges.
“This is the fourth yacht I have worked on with this client, and it is always a great creative experience,” said Wallen. “Paintings are created for the environment in which they are housed, and yachts offer a dynamic environment. Yachts have ever-changing lighting, are both indoors and outdoors, and they change location. For the artist, this is both challenging and exhilarating.”
Skyler has made the rounds of major yacht shows around the world, and has been widely praised for its design.
Wallen is an accomplished painter and sculptor. She has produced artwork for four of the world’s largest yacht companies since 1987 and has a visual presence at the top yacht shows in the world. For the past decade her sculptures have been accepted into the top ten sculpture shows in the United States. She is a mother of four and resides in Warsaw.
