Michigan Woman’s Florida Trip Cut Short When Police Find Drugs
KOSCIUSKO — A Michigan woman is facing drug charges after police noticed her vehicle parked at a closed gas station after hours with the dome light on.
Elizabeth Ann Webster, 37, 251 N. 3rd St., Burr Oak, Mich., is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a level 6 felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor.
According to a report from the Claypool Police Department, officers observed a Ford van parked at the McClure’s gas station with its dome light on after the convenience store was closed for business on Saturday, June 2. Police identified Webster as the driver and reported there were additionally two adult males, one adult female and four juveniles in the van.
One of the adult males told police they were taking a break from driving and that they were all on their way to Florida. However, the passenger talking to police made the officers suspicious when he couldn’t stand still and despite instructions from officers kept putting his hands in his pockets.
Officers patted down the man and found a glass smoking device and two cut straws. They then asked Webster if there was anything illegal in the van and she gave officers a backpack, which produced more smoking devices as well as items containing a crystal substance later field tested and identified as methamphetamine. The police searched the van with permission and located a safe, which also contained drugs and paraphernalia, including a scale.
Webster told police she was mixing the methamphetamine with grape juice and drinking the mixture while driving.
Webster is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing at 8:15 a.m. July 26 in Kosciusko County Circuit Court.
