Warsaw Library Announces Book Recommendations
WARSAW — Summer reading has been going strong at the Warsaw Community Public Library. Hundreds of children have visited the library to celebrate reading and learning achievements. Inspired by these young readers, the library offer staff picks of recent children’s literature with a fresh take on fairy tales and fantasy fiction.
“Wolf in the Snow” by Matthew Cordell, the 2018 winner of the Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for children, tops the list. With bold ink and watercolor pictures, this nearly wordless book tells the story of a girl and a wolf cub who each get lost and rescue one another. Readers may notice the little girl’s hooded red coat and make connections to a famous fairy tale.
A new picture book written by Minh Le and illustrated by Dan Santat is “Drawn Together,” a story in which a boy bonds with his grandfather across the different languages and cultures that separate them. The two characters express themselves through stunning artwork that blends American superhero culture and Thai folklore.
For a good chapter book, another recommendation is “Grump: the Fairly True Tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” the latest fractured fairy tale by Liesl Shurtliff. The story postulates how Snow White’s story would look from the grumpy dwarf’s perspective.
“Belle Takes Flight” is a new novel by Kathy McCullough that continues the story of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” The spell is broken, but the Prince is in trouble again, and Belle and her friends must rescue him.
Fairy tale fans also do not want to miss these two free events happening at the library next week. On Monday, July 23, at 2 or 6 p.m. check out the Stevens Puppets production of “Beauty and the Beast.” On Wednesday, July 25, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. join us for a fairy tale-themed makerspace and Disney movie sing-along.
There is still time to celebrate summer reading achievements at the library. Tuesday, July 31, is the last day to log reading activity and pick up prizes.
