WAWASEE 1, WESTVIEW 0
In a game dominated by offense, it came down to one spot kick.
Chris Pena scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute for the only goal of the match in what was Wawasee’s season opener.
Dillon Drake was called on late in the match, and stood the test in saving a Westview penalty kick in the waning moments to the hosts off the board.
The match saw both clubs combine for 23 shots and 14 of those on target. Drake made nine saves to record his first clean sheet of the season.
It’s the second straight win for Wawasee over Westview to open the season.
Wawasee (1-0) will visit South Bend Riley Thursday evening.
WARSAW 1, ARGOS 1
In a matchup of two state-ranked teams, Warsaw and Argos battled to a draw in Marshall County.
Jorge Rico had Warsaw’s lone goal, assisted on the score by Blake Burns. Class 1-A No. 13 Argos countered with a strike from Chino Roque, helped on the play by Lukas Van Der Weele.
Harrison Mevis made just one save in net for the Class 3-A No. 13 Tigers while Colton Markley was peppered with 10 shots, making nine saves. Rico was responsible for five of those shots on goal.
Warsaw (1-0-1) will host Fort Wayne Northrop next Tuesday.
