Britton, Knight Win Doubles Sectional Title
CULVER — Warsaw’s Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight downed Triton’s Chase Butler and Carter Kuntz for the doubles sectional title, while host Culver Academies and Carmel advanced at the CMA team semi-state tennis tournament Saturday.
Butler and Kuntz pushed them to 13 games in the second set, but Britton and Knight put them away in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 after advancing into the doubles tournament as one of two match points in Warsaw’s team regional loss to Peru last week. They’ll play the winners of the Concord Doubles Sectional at the Portage Regional next Saturday at 10 a.m.
In Saturday’s team tourney, moved to the indoor courts at the Gable Tennis Complex, Carmel blanked Penn 5-0, while the host Eagles edged Munster, 3-2.
Presley Thienenm beat William Thurin, 6-0, 6-0 at 1 singles, Broc Fletcher defeated Aidan Sucharetz, 6-0, 6-2 at 2 singles, while Srisanth Malpeddi swept Peter Yang, 6-0, 6-0 at 3 singles, Timmy Dixon and Garrett Lloyd did likewise to Siddharth Das and Alvin Wang at 1 doubs, and Uday Lomada and Jones McNamar shut out Jackson Buhring and Jack Dinnon at 2 doubs as top-ranked Carmel gave up a total of just two games to Penn. The Greyhounds advance to play No. 2-rated Homestead in the quarterfinals of the state finals at Center Grove Friday.
No. 23 CMA needed a three-setter from Henry Bilicic to advance past No. 11 Munster, meanwhile.
Bilicic downed Payton Specht, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to give his team its third match point on the Eagles’ home courts Saturday. Nikolas Warnholtz defeated Jack Gauderman 6-0, 6-0 at 1 singles, while Vincent Huang and Paul Wilson topped D.J. Fesko and Kathir Venkat, 6-1, 6-2 at 2 doubles.
Joe Webster defeated Christopher Bower, 6-3, 6-2 at 2 singles, and Zach Schmidt and Frank Wolf put away Jordan Craig and Peter Gallagher, 6-0, 6-1 at 1 doubles for Munster’s two match points.
The Eagles advance to play North Central at Carmel Friday.
