Winona Lake Grace Brethren To Hold Auction For Habitat Build
WINONA LAKE — Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, 1200 Kings Highway, will host a Home Sweet Home dessert and quilt auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at The Hub, a community building behind the church at the corner of Publishers Drive and College Avenue in Winona Lake.
The dessert, consisting of homemade pie baked by congregation members, ice cream, coffee and apple cider, is available for a freewill donation, and runs from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. The dessert is accompanied by a silent auction of more than 60 themed and quilt-related items and baskets.
A live auction, featuring auctioneer Glenn Hochstetler of MeadowBlend Auctions, Leesburg, will begin at 8 p.m. Approximately 12 to 15 locally made quilts and more than 20 other handcrafted items will be auctioned, including “Be My Neighbor,” the queen-size featured quilt pieced by a group of women at Winona Lake Grace Brethren and quilted by Kathy Slater.
For those who are unsuccessful at bidding, a table with smaller items for purchase will be available.
By design, all items carry a theme of home, house, family or comfort. Basket themes include “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “Star of Bethlehem,” Thomas Kinkade, pumpkins, thankful home, “Kids Love Christmas,” “Deck the Halls,” “Homebaked Holidays,” gingerbread house, “Heart of the Home,” sweet treats, stationery and correspondence, homemade porcelain baby doll, chocolate lovers, barbecue, man’s tool bucket and “Bringing Baby Home” for a boy and girl.
Other auction items include a handmade fishing pole, pillows, coffee mugs and a variety of items made from a repurposed vintage quilt.
“The large goal is to offer positive, uplifting products that honor home and family and the Lord, and which are a witness to our community as we raise funds,” said Dianna Williams, one of the church volunteers organizing the event.
All proceeds will benefit the newest home build by Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County. The community is invited to participate in the dessert and auctions to help with the construction project.
“There are more ways to build than just with a hammer,” said Director Mickey Kaufman.
The home build, Habitat’s 20th, is for longtime Winona Lake residents Jim and Tina Bauer. Jim, a member of the National Guard for nine years, was put on disability and is primarily home-bound from his former career in carpentry and maintenance. The Bauers have three children and eight grandchildren.
“It is a good time for the community to come together to do something good,” said Williams. “People have been very generous. It is encouraging to see people wanting to be in touch with others and help provide for their needs.”
Fellow volunteer Liz Cutler Gates applauded the “high quality of the items donated from a wide variety of people.”
“The team wants to thank the local businesses who have donated graciously to the event,” said Williams.
The event is sponsored by the Practical Living Class of the church’s adult Bible fellowship. Gates advised attendees to “prepare to have a nice evening and support the Bauers and Habitat for Humanity.” Donations and purchases may be made by cash, check or credit or debit card, she said.
No child care will be provided during the event.
