Fall Play A Classic, Timeless Story
SYRACUSE — It’s a dilemma faced by the corporate world for multiple generations. At what point is work becoming too draining and what is really more important, making money or enjoying life?
Wawasee High School’s fall play, “You Can’t Take It With You” is the classic and timeless story of balancing work and home life with a comedic twist. Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, the play premiered on Broadway in 1936 and was later adapted into a movie starring Jimmy Stewart.
Show times will be 7 p.m. Nov. 2-3, and 2 p.m. Nov. 4 in the high school auditorium. Tickets cost $5 when purchased online at wawaseeperformingarts.ludus.com or are $7 at the door. Seating is general admission.
Kristin Bonner, one of the play’s directors, noted “You Can’t Take It With You” involves an eccentric older man, Grandpa Vanderhof, played by Conner Lucas, who decided he wanted to leave the corporate world to enjoy life more. He lives with his daughter, Penny Sycamore (played by Rebekah Whirledge) and son-in-law Paul Sycamore (played by Nick Lesko).
Also living with Grandpa are his two granddaughters, Essie Sycamore (Bronwyn Bonner) and Alice Sycamore (Brianne Stewart) and her boyfriend, Tony Kirby (Jared Krugman). There is also Mr. Kolenhkov (Evan Coblentz).
“It (the play) is about the clash between people who work for money and those who enjoy life, and then you have all these colorful characters popping in,” Bonner said.
For many years the play has been one of the most produced in high schools across America. “It has a good message, it is a timeless story and there a lot of characters to develop,” she commented. “There are random things in the house and you never know what will pop up.”
In the end Tony Kirby’s father (Braxton Gray) finally sees the people have something he doesn’t have and which money can’t buy.
Rehearsal for the play began the second week of school. It is being performed a couple of weeks earlier this year due to some work that will be done in the auditorium.
Other cast members include Serena Lesko, Andrik Bautista, Adrianna Clark, Bennett Mickley, Devin Van Lue, Dylan Minear, Trinity Smeltzer, Tia White, Riley Menzie, Genevieve Cierpilowski, Grace Morrison, Isiah Faurote and Noah Beckner. Student directors are Lila Fierek and Rachael Sweatland. Assisting Bonner is Mindy Coblentz.
