PALM COAST, Fla. – Grace’s golf teams wrapped up its fall campaigns taking part in the NCCAA National Championships.
The Lancer men ended seventh out of nine teams at Florida’s Hammock Beach Resort. Grace was making its second trip in three years to NCCAA Nationals under head coach Denny Hepler. The women placed sixth among its field.
A trio of freshmen led the Lancers. Noah Wright was electric, just missing out on All-American recognition. He shot 78 in his first championship round and followed that up with a one-under 71 and an 80 in the final round. He placed 12th on the final individual leaderboard.
Wright’s 71 was tied for the sixth-lowest round in the tournament.
Jacob Abrahamson and Caleb Leak were steady as both players carded a pair of sub-80 rounds. Abrahamson shot 83-77-78, and Leak finished 78-78-82.
Chad Spencer (249) and Camden Gongwer (251) rounded out Grace’s scoring. Both Spencer and Gongwer shot 81 in the final round for their best performances.
Anna Marshall was Grace’s top competitor, placing 15th in the nation. She carded a sizzling three-under 75 in the opening round, which put her just one stroke off the lead. Her 75 also set a program record for a single championship round.
Overall, Marshall’s 242 was the best national tournament score in Grace’s history.
Sydney Abbott was a model of consistency. The junior, who played at least year’s NCCAA Nationals as an individual, shot 83-84-83 to tie for 21st place.
Tying Abbott for 21st was her teammate Kristin Holt. Holt was one of a handful of golfers who improved in every round, starting with an 87 and ending 83-80 over her final two rounds.
Lauren Keiser shot a combined 258, and Kara Godsey carded a 263 in her first national tournament experience.
The Lancers will resume tournament play in the spring, aiming at the 2019 Crossroads League Championships.
