Grace Adds More Honors To Shelf
WINONA LAKE – Grace once again claimed a handful of sports in the Crossroads League Players of the Week honors list, which was released Monday. Among the honorees were women’s soccer players Bethany Blackwood and Allison Vroon and volleyballer Caylie Teel.
Grace’s women’s soccer team, fresh off a Crossroads League championship, had multiple Player of the Week awards.
Bethany Blackwood was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the CL and the NCCAA, and Allison Vroon was the CL’s Offensive Player of the Week.
Blackwood made seven saves in 98 minutes to shut out No. 11 Marian 1-0 in overtime. She has an incredible 14 shutouts this year (best in the NAIA) while starting all 18 matches. She has played every minute of the season as Grace’s goalkeeper.
Vroon scored the game-winning goal in overtime to upset Marian. She volleyed in the golden goal in the 98th minute, helping the Lady Lancers secure a share of the conference championship for the first time in program history.
Grace, the No. 2 seed in this week’s CL Tournament, will potentially host two games. The Lady Lancers will host Huntington on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals. With a win Grace would host the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. against either Marian or Indiana Wesleyan.
Caylie Teel of Grace’s volleyball team picked up a pair of Player of the Week notations.
Teel was named the NCCAA National Player of the Week and the Crossroads League Attacker of the Week for the Lady Lancers.
She had a dominant week offensively, pounding out 5.1 kills per set. Teel had 51 kills on a .285 percentage. On defensive, she added 3.1 digs/set to go along with four block assists.
Grace will host a pair of matches this week. Grace will welcome Goshen on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night in the regular season finale.
The Crossroads League Tournament starts on Saturday when Grace welcomes Taylor for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal match at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
