COLUMBIA CITY BOYS 64, NORTHWOOD 54
NorthWood couldn’t find a way to slow down Mitchell Wilson in a 10-point loss at The Pit.
Wilson hit from all angles of the court, hitting 5-8 from three-point range, 3-5 from inside the arc and, most importantly, 13-14 from the free throw stripe. His 34 points was the most the Panthers have given up to an opponent this season. Wilson also had six rebounds and seven steals in the complete effort.
Michael Sievers had nine points and three assists and TJ Bedwell and Dillion Sheiss each had eight points for the Eagles.
Columbia City as a squad was 24-28 from the free throw line in the contest.
On the Panthers’ side, Trent Edwards dropped in a career-high 20 points on 9-13 shooting. Ben Vincent had 10 points and Nick Bean and Matt Dutkowski each had seven points.
NorthWood falls to 3-6 overall and has lost five straight for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Columbia City improves to 3-6, carrying a modest two-game win streak into its Dec. 28 matchup against Tippecanoe Valley. NorthWood will play South Bend Clay on the 28th.
The undercard had City’s JV take a 40-31 win over Wood and the host freshmen beat City 53-40. Stats were not provided from the JV game. In the freshman game, Caden Graham led NorthWood with 15 points and Tariq Harp and Brady Hunsberger each had 12 points.
WAWASEE BOYS 60, CENTRAL NOBLE 52
Wawasee took part in an all-hands-on-deck quintuple header, with all three boys programs and both girls programs playing at Central Noble Friday night.
Wawasee’s highest-scoring output of the season in the varsity boys contest had the Warriors score 22 points in the second quarter, but only hold a two-point lead, 32-30, at the break.
Austin Miller hit his season-high scoring output with 23 points, burying four three-pointers. Miller also had four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
Aaron Evans also had a season-high 17 points, Ben Hoffert had 10 points and six assists and Ethan Hardy added six points and 10 rebounds.
Ridley Zolman led the Cougars with 14 points and seven boards and Ryan Schroeder added 10 points.
Wawasee’s JV won 45-42, stats were not made available from the game.
In the freshman contest to start the night, Wawasee eeked out a 44-42 win over the Cougars. Jackson Stover led the Warriors with 18 points and Landon Gause added 12 points in the winning cause.
Wawasee (2-6) will take on Garrett in the first of two games Dec. 28 in the Wawasee Shootout.
CENTRAL NOBLE GIRLS 66, WAWASEE 26
The Class 2-A No. 1 Cougars didn’t let Wawasee even sniff the idea of an upset.
A 23-4 first quarter for the hosts eliminated any doubt. Sydney Freeman, a Ball State recruit, continued to rip the nets, scoring 11 of her 19 points in the first quarter. St. Francis signee Meleah Leatherman scored eight of her game-high 25 points in the first quarter. Anna Stayner added 11 points for the 14-0 Cougars.
Rhian Galloway finished with six points and four rebounds for the Lady Warriors, with Casey Schroeder adding five points and two steals.
Wawasee used 13 points from Ella Beezley and six points and six rebounds from Becca Smith to defeat Central Noble 50-32 in the JV game.
Wawasee (2-11) will take on Norwell and Indianapolis Brebeuf in the Wawasee Shootout on Dec. 29.
