BREAKING — Two Hurt In Head-On Collision Near TVHS
AKRON — Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals following a head-on collision on SR 19 just south of Tippecanoe Valley High School Thursday evening, Jan. 10.
Dispatchers called emergency units from Mentone at approximately 6:21 p.m. to respond to a two-car collision at 8681 S. SR 19. The crash involved a maroon Chevrolet Trailblazer and a blue Honda Fit and first responders called in to Central Dispatch to confirm that at least one of the drivers, both male, would have to be extricated. Police at the scene said there were no passengers.
According to a member of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, the SUV was traveling northbound when for an unknown reason, it left the roadway. The officer said the driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and collide with the Honda. Both vehicles came to rest in a yard on the west side of SR 19. The SUV came to rest on its side and the Honda came to rest facing the road and adjacent to a utility pole. The violence of the collision left the rear differential of the SUV lying in the middle of the road.
The officer said at the scene that one of the drivers complained of pain to multiple parts of his body and would be transported to a hospital by helicopter. It was not known at the time if the other driver would be air-lifted or simply driven to the hospital by ambulance.
Mentone emergency personnel called for helicopter support at approximately 6:30 p.m. and also called for assistance from Burket firefighters. Personnel at the scene reported that the helicopter lifted off from the scene en route to the hospital at 7:13 p.m.
Units from both Mentone and Burket responded to the crash, as well as officers from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.
