New York City Artist To Exhibit, Lecture At Grace College
WINONA LAKE — Grace College is pleased to welcome acclaimed visual artist Chris Anderson to exhibit her work and present a Lyceum Series Lecture on Thursday, March 14.
Anderson’s “Drawn and Quartered: 160 Acres Waiting for a Development” will be displayed for the first time at Grace College from March 13 to April 13. The exhibit’s opening reception and artist talk will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 14 in the Mount Memorial Art Gallery, 901 College Ave., Winona Lake. Following the reception, Anderson will deliver the 2019 Lyceum Lecture entitled “Intersection of Art and Faith” at 7:30 p.m. in Westminster Hall, 105 9th St., Winona Lake.
Anderson has received numerous awards and honors for her artistic accomplishments, including The National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant Award, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Awards in Painting, and the German Fulbright Commission. She earned her BA at Scripps College and her Master’s in Fine Art at Claremont Graduate University; she also studied at Pratt Institute of Art and Tyler School of Art in Rome. Her work has been exhibited stateside and abroad and is held in more than 50 public and corporate collections. Anderson currently lives and works in New York City.
“It is a privilege to have Chris Anderson’s artwork displayed on our campus,” said Kim Reiff, chair of the Visual, Performing and Media Arts Department at Grace College. “Her work will challenge viewers to consider their longing for cultural authenticity, their spiritual and historic roots, and beauty in life’s little spaces.”
“Drawn and Quartered: 160 Acres Waiting for a Development” is part of Anderson’s ongoing project, “The Last American Farm,” which explores the issues of diminishing green spaces and the future of the family farm at the edge of expanding urban and suburban developments. The name comes from the land measure, where 640 acres are called a section, and 160 acres is a quarter-section, thus “Drawn and Quartered.” Each 11 x 30 inch panel in the exhibit represents one acre of farmland from across the American landscape.
In addition to displaying her art at Grace College, Chris Anderson will present “Intersection of Art and Faith” at the 2019 Lyceum Lecture at 7:30 p.m. March 14.
“Chris will be our first visual artist to deliver a Lyceum Series Lecture, so we are especially excited to welcome her to campus,” said Dr. Lauren Rich, chair of the Department of Language, Literature and Communication at Grace College. “She is an artist and a scholar whose faith informs both her work and scholarship. She will be a great addition to our Lyceum Series.”
Chris Anderson’s opening reception and Lyceum Lecture are free and open to the public. For questions or more information, please call (574) 372-5100, ext. 6021, or e-mail [email protected].
