Three Injured When Horse Gets Spooked
NAPPANEE — A husband, wife and their child suffered injuries when the horse that was pulling their buggy became spooked and went in front of a truck, causing a collision on CR 1350N, west of CR 700W. The accident was around 3:55 p.m.
Vernon L. Yoder, 38, Fourth Road, Bremen, was operating a horse and buggy eastbound on CR 1350N when for an unknown reason the horse became spooked and went into the westbound lane of travel. Jesse J. Bechtold, 30, CR 28, Goshen, was traveling westbound in a truck owned by NAPA Auto, and swerved into the eastbound lane in an attempt to miss the horse, however, a collision occurred with the buggy.
After impact the horse and buggy went into the ditch at the residence and overturned. Yoder, his wife Ada Mae Yoder, 38, and their son were able to get out of the buggy and walk to the ambulance. All three were transported by Nappanee EMS to Elkhart General Hospital. Bechtold was checked by paramedics but signed off on any medical treatment at the scene.
