UPDATE: City And County Offices Closed, Power Outage Updates Listed
WARSAW — Nonessential offices for Winona Lake, Warsaw and Kosciusko County have been closed for the remainder of the day due to power outages. Much of downtown Warsaw remained without power shortly before noon today, Thursday, May 23, after a strong, pre-dawn storm swept through northern Indiana.
Area schools were also closed as a result of the power outages. Winona Lake, Milford and Mentone were among the areas hardest hit. Many areas reported tree damage. In Warsaw, Economy Inn, located along US 30, sustained roof damage, and guests were evacuated.
Strong wind reaching more than 60 mph downed power lines and tree limbs throughout the region.
As of noon, approximately 10,000 Kosciusko REMC members were without power. According to the NIPSCO website, the following towns were reporting approximate outage figures by town:
- Warsaw — 5,000
- Syracuse — 250
- Winona Lake — 40
- Silver Lake — 600
- North Webster — 111
- Pierceton — 117
- Leesburg — 151
- Mentone — 97
