CANTERBURY WINS TRITON INVITE

In what amounted to a final tune-up for most clubs Saturday, Fort Wayne Canterbury put on a best of show performance to win the Triton Golf Invite at Swan Lake.

The Cavaliers shots a 320 to topple the 18-team field, besting neighborhood rivals Fort Wayne Carroll by five strokes and upstart NorthWood by 12.

The Panthers were the surprise of the tournament after finishing fourth at the Northern Lakes Conference tournament last weekend. With all three programs that beat the Panthers also in the field, NorthWood’s 332 was 13 strokes better than NLC champ Plymouth, 26 better than a short-handed Warsaw club and 31 clear of Wawasee.

Triton, which won the Hoosier North Athletic Conference tournament last weekend, dropped down to eighth at 353 and had its B squad shoot 388 for 16th.

Zionsville, which has played remarkably well this season, was fourth at 337, Westview was sixth at 350 and Guerin Catholic’s B Squad was seventh at 352 among notables in the field.

Brian Behrens of Zionsville bested Carroll’s Ben Rudolph by a stroke in the playoff for individual medalist, both carding a 77 in regulation. Kokomo’s Branden Hanson shot a 78 for third followed by the Canterbury duo of Cam Cobler at 78 and Carson Stohler at 79.

Triton’s A Team had Beau Hepler lead the way with an 84, followed by Cole McKinney at 87, Chase Butler at 90, John Gardner at 92 and Carter Kuntz at 93.

Triton’s B Team had Gavin Butler shoot 92, followed by Brock Watkins at 96, Connor Large and Kaden Atkins both score 100, and Bruce Johnson and Breylon Wareham both finish at 104.

Wawasee had Evan Dippon shoot 86, followed by Zach Leedy at 88, Tyler Bosstick at 89, Caden Welty at 94, Brandon Tayagua at 95 and Dillon Drake at 99.

Warsaw had Jack Yeager shoot 83, followed by Brandon Bender at 85, Seth Hildebrand at 90, Jeremy Ryman at 100 and Mason Whitaker at 107 in a split squad effort.

NorthWood had Jon Cripe pace the team with an 80, followed closely by Cooper Wiens at 81, Sean Hogan at 82 and Keaton Kitson at 89.

Triton has one match left in the regular season, an entry in Tuesday’s Leo Invite before shifting to the Warsaw Sectional on Friday at Rozella. Warsaw and Wawasee are both off until the Warsaw Sectional while NorthWood will not compete until Friday’s Northridge Sectional, where it will look to defend its back-to-back championships.

TIGERS EIGHTH AT JEFF CLASSIC

The other half of Warsaw’s roster took part in the Lafayette Jeff Classic, taking eighth place with a 329.

Guerin Catholic’s A Squad, which is ranked No. 2 in the state, shot 304 to win the Classic.

For the Tigers, Cal Hoskins fired a 76 on the par-72 course, which measured over 7,100 yards at Battle Ground Golf Club. Chase Byron shot 82, Tucker Carlile had 83 and Lewis Turley finished at 88 for the Warsaw scorers.
