Parkview Warsaw YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program Begins Sept. 23
WARSAW — Parkview Warsaw YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will be offered from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, and will meet weekly.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29 million adults in the United States have diabetes and 86 million adults have pre-diabetes. This means that one out of three people in the community are at risk of Type 2 diabetes and most may not even know it.
To address this, Parkview Warsaw YMCA is partnering with the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne to offer the diabetes prevention program, which helps adults lose five to seven percent of their body weight through healthier eating and increased physical activity. These two things combined can help prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes and reduce the overall numbers of diabetes cases by 58 percent.
The Diabetes Prevention Program consists of 25 sessions over a year. Each participant will meet with a trained lifestyle coach to adopt healthy behavior changes through setting goals, problem-solving and physical activity.
To participate in the Warsaw program, pre-registration is required. Please contact the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne at (260) 487-1030 or e-mail [email protected]. YMCA membership is not required for participation.
If you need help determining if you are pre-diabetic, please take advantage of YMCA’s free A1C screenings. These free screenings are being offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 20.
