Once A Tiger, Always A Tiger
WARSAW – Apparently, Tiger pride runs deep within Harrison Mevis.
Mevis, a superstar kicker for the Warsaw Tigers football team, made his college announcement Wednesday evening on Twitter, choosing to become a Missouri Tiger.
Mevis, who is ranked the No. 2 place kicker and No. 10 punter in the country per the Kohl’s Kicking Rankings, teased the decision Tuesday with a Twitter post about receiving a scholarship offer from the Tigers. He followed up with the formal announcement Wednesday, becoming the second kicker in the Mevis household to sign with a Division 1 school for football.
Andrew Mevis, who was a standout kicker for Warsaw and also a star soccer player, signed with Fordham University and has become the team’s leading kicker as a now junior. Little brother is following in those footsteps.
“For me, what made Missouri the draw is the coaching staff,” Mevis said Wednesday night. “I have grown really close with Andy Hill, the special teams coordinator at Missouri. I really love how they buy into each player and also love where they are going as a program. They play SEC football which is also huge because every player wants to play at the highest level and they do just that, and do it very well.”
Through three games this season, Mevis has already made an impact for Warsaw’s football program. Most notably, Mevis drilled a 51-yard field goal to push Warsaw over in a 20-19 win at Michigan City in week two. For the season, Mevis is 5-6 in field goals and 10-10 in extra points, the longest the 51-yarder against Michigan City. Mevis has also had seven punts travel 238 yards, a 34-yard average.
Mevis has split his time with both football and soccer at Warsaw, serving as the soccer team’s goalkeeper. The Tigers, ranked No. 11 in the latest state poll, are off to a 9-2 start this season.
Mizzou is 1-1 on the 2019 season, losing to Wyoming in week one but rebounding with a big win over West Virginia in week two. The Tigers have seven players in kicking positions on the active roster, and just one is a senior. Five are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen and one is a redshirt sophomore.
