PANTHERS CLAIM ANOTHER TOURNEY TITLE
NorthWood won its second straight weekend tournament, taking all four games it played at the Concord Invite.
After winning the Prairie Heights tourney last weekend, NorthWood won its pool play in straight sets over Plymouth and West Noble, then had to go three – 23-25, 25-21, 15-7 – to beat New Prairie. In the championship round, NorthWood defeated host Concord 25-15, 25-9 to earn another trophy for the case. Leading the way for NorthWood were Maddy Payne with 36 kills and Caroline Mullet with 87 assists.
The Panthers haven’t lost a dual match since mid-August, moving to 16-3 won the season.
TROJANS FALL IN HOME FINALE
Triton got the rematch it wanted, but come up with the redemption card in the championship match of its own Triton Tournament.
Triton won all three of its pool matches, beating LaVille, Culver and Argos in straight sets. Making the final against a John Glenn team that beat the Trojans in match one of the season, the Falcons had the answers in a 25-12, 25-16 championship.
Stats from the tournament were not provided.
WARSAW RACKS UP THREE WINS AT LAPORTE
Warsaw won three matches at the LaPorte Tourney, but possibly more importantly, exacted some revenge. Warsaw lost to Fort Wayne Concordia 2-1 in its first match, going 15-13 in the third set. The Tigers rallied to beat Mishawaka Marian in two and were taken to three by Northridge, but won 15-8 in the third. In the consolation round, Warsaw finally got past Elkhart Memorial 25-20, 23-25, 16-14. The Chargers had beaten Warsaw twice earlier in the season, including a wild five-set Northern Lakes Conference match two weeks ago.
Stat leaders for Warsaw included Avery Hales with 80 assists and 26 kills and Kylie Smith with 51 digs.
GRACE 3, GOSHEN 1
Grace jumped out to an early 4-1 edge in the first set and never gave up the lead, winning the set 25-19.
In the second set, the Lady Lancers found themselves down 11-16 before head coach Katie Van Hofwegen called a timeout. This proved to be a crucial decision as Grace went on to score six unanswered points to take the lead. The Lady Lancers rode the momentum to a 25-22 win.
On the verge of a sweep, the Lady Lancers stumbled in the third set. Goshen held a lead for most of the set.
Down 20-24, Grace rallied with kills from Jadyn Block and Makaela Lochmueller to push the score to 23-24 and force a Goshen timeout. Goshen scored a quick point out of the timeout to take the set 25-23.
The Lady Lancers responded in the fourth set, dominating at the net. Of the first 13 points, six of them were block points.
An ace from Emily Sharp and key blocks from Makayla Bell, Lochmueller and Katie Swanson culminated in an early 13-5 lead. Grace closed out the set with big kills from Corynne Aelker and Alexa Hill to win 25-14.
Swanson enjoyed a standout performance, producing a season-high 15 kills to lead Grace. Bell also hit double digits with 12 kills. Hill led the team with 43 assists.
The Lady Lancers’ defense was anchored by Gina Novotny with 20 digs. Sharp and Grace Erwin contributed 13 digs apiece.
Lochmueller was dominant at the net, with five block assists and a solo block to go along with seven kills. Block also finished with a season-best eight kills.
WARSAW JUNIORS 2-1 AT MICHIGAN CITY INVITE
Warsaw beat Valpo and Kankakee Valley among its work at the Michigan City JV Invite. Warsaw beat Valpo 2-1 and Kankakee Valley 2-0 and losing to Penn 2-0 in its matches. Stat leaders for Warsaw included Saide Walden with 23 digs, Katie McKibben with 17 digs, Tessa Graney with 43 assists and Madeline Schannep with 16 kills and 12 aces.
TIGER FRESHMEN GO 2-2 IN HOME TOURNEY
Warsaw split its four games at its home freshman tournament. The Tigers lost to Woodlan and South Bend Adams before salvaging a pool win against St. Joe (Mich.). In the consolation round, Warsaw beat Wawasee 25-18, 25-17. Stat leaders for Warsaw included Maylin Marrufo with 30 kills, Lauren Eastwood with 61 assists and 13 aces, Tianna Davis with eight blocks and Delaney Silveus with 45 digs. Woodlan would go on to win the championship 25-18, 25-20 against Fort Wayne Carroll.
LAKEVIEW WINS TWO TITLES
The host Lakeview eighth grade team won its tournament Saturday, beating Tippecanoe Valley, West Noble and Westview, the final match 25-13, 25-23. Stat leaders for the eighth graders from Lakeview included Clara Porter with 21 assists, eight kills and three aces, Kenzie Chivington with 17 assists, seven kills, four aces and two digs and Jael Simfukwe with 11 kills, seven aces and an assist. Stat leaders for Tippecanoe Valley, which went 1-2 in its games, included Sidney Nelson with 12 aces, eight kills and eight digs, Ava Smith with 12 digs and Lilly Allen with eight kills and six aces.
The seventh grade Lakeview also won its home tournament. In the championship run, Lakeview defeated Tippecanoe Valley, West Noble and Westview all in straight sets, Westview’s tally a 25-4, 25-10 capper. Stat leaders for the seventh grade champions included Lilia Gustafson with eight aces and seven kills, Daihya Chupp with eight assists, four kills and three aces, and Maggie Hollon with 10 kills and two aces. State leaders for Tippecanoe Valley, which went 2-1 in its games, included Mackaylie Costello with 13 aces and five kills and Avery Wagoner with eight aces.
