Nicholette Carlson’s pumpkin photo won second place for Division 1 in the HSPA awards held Saturday, Sept. 14.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Mail-Journal won three second-place awards Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Hoosier State Press Association annual banquet held at The Nest Event Center in Greenwood, near Indianapolis.

Reporter Nicholette Carlson won second place in the best portrait category with the “Great Pumpkin” photo she took at Syracuse Fall Festival.

The staff won second place in community service with the election articles.

Reporters Martha Stoelting, David Hazledine and Lasca Randels won second place in the headline category for the division.
