Steffensmeier New Queen Of Goals
WARSAW – It has been a crown that has moved quite a bit in recent years, but one that Abby Steffensmeier currently wears.
Steffensmeier potted three goals Monday night against Fort Wayne Northrop to move to 71 goals in her high school career, the new leader in career goals for Warsaw girls soccer. Steffensmeier added two assists for good measure as the Lady Tigers roared past Northrop, 5-1.
Steffensmeier passed Liz Van Wormer on the career list, Van Wormer finishing her prolific career in 2015 with 70 goals. The assists were also key as they landed Steffensmeier with 170 points, tying Van Wormer for the all-time lead in that category. The rangy Steffensmeier started her career with 15 goals as a freshman, then exploded as a sophomore with 28 goals, followed by 15 tallies in 2018 and has 13 so far in 2019 after 11 matches. Her 28 career assists has her in position to catch Delaney Taylor’s team record of 40 helpers. Taylor, a classmate of Steffensmeier, reached that number in three years as Taylor is currently sidelined by injury.
The goals record has bounced around a few times this decade, as Meredith Hollar broke Kitchens’ record in 2012, then Van Wormer topped her old teammate in 2015.
For the match Monday, Corissa Koontz and Audrey Grimm also scored for the Tigers.
Warsaw’s JV also punched in a win with a 5-1 scoreline on Northrop. Bonnie Hampton, Valeria Marquez-Martinez and Kiana Rager all had a goal and an assist for the Tigers. Macy Wayne and Izzi Bradley also scored in the win.
Warsaw (7-3-1) hosts No. 11 Penn Thursday night.
