GRACE WOMEN 4, IU KOKOMO 3
Grace’s women’s tennis team pulled out a narrow 4-3 victory over IU Kokomo on Monday to improve to 9-1 on the season.
The Lady Lancers pulled ahead after claiming the doubles’ point. Emily Mast and Dayana Ortega won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Carrie Copeland and Jayna Armstrong also won by the same score at No. 2.
The Cougars (4-3) made the match interesting by winning the bottom three singles’ courts.
But Grace clinched the match by sweeping No. 1-3 singles. Copeland cruised 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Ortega won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.
Mast was the final point of the match. She battled to a win at No. 1 singles by a scoreline of 7-6 (5), 6-2.
The Lady Lancers will remain at home on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. match against No. 25 Marian. The game will likely determine the No. 2 and No. 3 finishers in the Crossroads League standings.
CONCORD BOYS 5, WARSAW 0
Warsaw was swept by its Northern Lakes Conference rivals ahead of the conference tournament later this week.
Three of the five courts went the distance, but all in favor of the Minutemen. Bryson Shrock and Mitchell Whitehead both won three setters at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Shrock besting Caleb Williams 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 and Whitehead 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Two doubles also went the distance, with Brayden Newburn and Thomas Burket beat Cole Rhodes and Carter Schuh 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Nathan Schraw claimed the No. 3 singles court against Hayden Anderson 6-2, 6-4 and Gavin Smith and Kayden Cain took care of Will Boren and Michael Ray 6-1, 6-2 at one doubles.
