Art In Action: A Surprise Carousel
By Darla McCammon
A few weeks ago, we learned about the fabulous carousels located in western New York. We also learned about the challenge in creating the animals that offer all ages a ride on the merry-go-rounds all set to wonderful music.
We discussed the artistry and engineering that goes into these now rare and creative entertainments. Enjoyment abounds, from the original carvings down to the artists who apply the vividly colored paints that are a delight to our eyes.
Much to my surprise, on a recent trip to Shipshewana, I discovered we have a treasured carousel that spins around no matter the weather outside. You and your children are welcome to ride this beauty at Dave’s Mercantile, a four-level treasure of shops, places with incredible edibles, and up on level three, you can step out to see and ride this gorgeous 1906 Dentzel Carousel featuring appropriately, and magnificently carved, jumper horses. Jumpers are the traditional animals on most carousels, but in the heart of America’s farmland, you will also find carved sheep, roosters, dogs and other clever animals made for you to ride as the carousel whirls.
There are 21 other shops in this one building so plan a full day if you want to get the most exposure to the Amish atmosphere of Shipshewana.
Now you are in for another surprise. It was a chainsaw artist who carved the animals on this amazing carousel. Once the restoration project was planned, it was not long before the sculptor was selected. Al Bontrager agreed to help restore and replace many of the animals attached to this particular carousel. Bontrager was born south of Shipshewana in Topeka. He uses a chainsaw and other power tools to assist him in his creations today, but as a youngster, at seven years old, he began whittling and carving with more primitive tools. The animals on the Shipshewana carousel are made of wood. It took Bontrager two years to complete the project as they renovated the old carousel.
So the next time you think about making an excursion where you and your kids can ride a carousel and pretend it is not blustery and cold outside, head to Davis Mercantile, 255 E. Main St., Shipshewana, and climb aboard this historic merry-go-round.
