GRACE COLLEGE WOMEN 84, GRACE CHRISTIAN 43
Grace’s women’s basketball team kicked off the Hoops for Hope Classic with an 84-43 victory on Friday.
Led by 17 points and five steals from Kyannah Stull, the Lady Lancers (5-1) defeated Grace Christian University at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
The game got off to a sloppy start as the Lady Lancers turned the ball over four times in the first four minutes.
The Tigers (2-6) took advantage of the miscues and snuck out to an early lead.
Despite runs from the Lady Lancers, the Tigers held the lead until the final seconds of the quarter.
Vironnica Drake closed out the quarter with a steal and a layup. Grace edged ahead 15-14, taking its first lead of the game.
Inspired by a fiery speech from head coach Dan Davis, the Lady Lancers opened the second quarter with aggressive pressure.
Suffocating defense turned into quick points for Grace, as Stull drilled a triple and added a layup to extend the lead.
The Lady Lancers never looked back, carrying a 40-24 lead into the half.
The Tigers coughed up the ball 20 times in the first half, which led to 24 points for the Lady Lancers.
Grace came out hot in third quarter, going on a 14-2 run to extend the lead. Kaylie Warble was the primary offensive weapon, scoring eight points in the first five minutes.
The Lady Lancers ended the third quarter with a 35-point lead.
In the final stanza, Grace was deadly from downtown. Micaela Box, Mackenzie Pulley and Nikki Toth each connected from beyond the arc down the stretch.
Every player saw the floor as Grace wrapped up an 84-43 win.
Warble finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Brooke Treadway grabbed six boards to go along with four points, and Drake had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Kamryn Hostetler chipped in 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Freshman Maddie Ryman added seven points and two assists.
The Lady Lancers are back at home tomorrow, hosting Holy Family at 2 p.m.
GRACE COLLEGE MEN 84, HOLY FAMILY 74
Grace’s men’s basketball team kicked off the Hoops for Hope with a hard-fought 84-74 victory on Friday against Holy Family.
Haden Deaton poured in 29 points, four off his career high, to lead the Lancers (4-2) at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Grace shot a sizzling 52 percent collectively, drilling 10-of-20 from the 3-point line. Deaton by himself was 4-of-5 on 3s and shot 12-of-18 overall.
Grace’s offense was slow to connect to begin Friday’s game. The Lancers fell behind early 10-7 despite back-to-back 3-pointers from Charlie Warner and Jaret Sons.
But the Lancers hit their collective stride midway into the half. Grace went on a 12-0 run, sparked by six straight points in the paint from Deaton. Caleb Brown scored four more to put Grace ahead 22-12 with 9:16 remaining.
The Lakers (2-6) rallied late in the half, ending the period on a 10-2 spurt. Holy Family scored just before the final buzzer to slice Grace’s advantage to 38-35 at halftime.
Both teams shot well in the half with Grace at 50 percent and Holy Family at 54 percent. The Lakers were 5-of-10 from beyond the arc but did not attempt a free throw over the first 20 minutes.
The Lakers opened the second half with five quick points to tie the score at 40-40. That proved to be the closest Holy Family would get to the lead for the rest of the contest.
Deaton hit a triple on the next possession. A few minutes later, he erupted. Deaton racked up 12 points over a four-minute span to help the Lancers to a double-digit cushion.
Holy Family refused to fade, however. The Lakers trailed by 12 points with eight minutes left, but they patiently sliced the deficit to just three at 77-74 with 2:22 remaining.
Jennings buried a 3-pointer from the left wing during the ensuing possession to slow the Lakers’ momentum.
Grace’s defense took care of the rest. The Lancers held Holy Family scoreless for the final 2:21, and Grace sank four free throws to secure the win.
Warner finished with 15 points and a pair of 3-pointers, and Sons added 10 points and seven boards.
Jennings produced 11 points, 4 assists and 2 steals, and Eddie Gill IV had eight points and two steals.
Braxton Linville passed our six assists with four boards, and Caleb Brown chipped in six points and five boards.
SOUTH CENTRAL GIRLS 35, TRITON 31
In a tough shooting night for both teams, South Central’s free throw makes won it a game at the Trojan Trench.
The Satellites hit 9-15 freebies, whereas Triton’s 4-10 wound up being the difference. South Central and Triton both were cold from the floor, the Satellites were 11-34 in field goals, the Trojans 12-38.
Kinsey Atkins led Triton with eight points, five rebounds and four steals, but had a game-high eight turnovers. Taren Yates added seven points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Amber Wolf led South Central with 19 points and seven rebounds. Abbi Tomblin added seven points.
Triton lost the JV game to the Satellites, 50-8.
LAKELAND CHRISTIAN GIRLS 54, SOUTH BEND CAREER ACADEMY 13
The trio of Jessi Calizo, Tori Calizo and Finley Hobbs combined for 42 points to pace LCA to an easy victory.
Jessi Calizo led the way with 15 points and had a whopping 12 steals to go with six assists and five rebounds. Tori Calizo had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals and Hobbs had 13 points and three steals. Natalie Norris added eight points and eight steals.
LAKELAND CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS 43, ST. PAUL’S 25
